Are the new variants more transmissible ? apparently not !!

Here is a recent clip from Professor Sunetra Gupta, Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford, speaking at the International Covid-19 Symposium, on February 12 2021.

Despite daily new cases plummeting world-wide, including the majority of countries where new variants have been detected such as the UK and South Africa, there is little evidence of increased transmissibility – in fact quite the reverse. Professor Gupta explains that new variants gain marginal advantage and competitive exclusion from other strains, but are seldom more transmissible.

This could mean that the surge testing programme hunting the South African variant and the variant of the Kent strain in the UK are largely a waste of time.
